About Us

THE GOULD FAMILY

Knotting Hill Estate is 100% family operated business and owned by the Gould family. With Brian Gould as the Managing Director of the business and Michael Gould his son as the Vineyard Manager, together they oversee all aspects of the 70Ha Estate.

It all started when Brian Gould began farming when he was 16 years old and from there grew to build a large successful central wheat belt farming operation in Wongan Hills, located 240km North East of Perth in Western Australia. Having this long farming history in Western Australia, helped the Gould family begin their Margaret River journey in 1997 when they purchased the estate.

Many visitors ask how the Knotting Hill Estate name was derived and it’s a simple but intelligent story that relates back the figure eight knot that has been used extensively throughout the vineyard trellising. Many people thought it was because we came from Notting Hill in England.
The figure eight knot has now become our logo.

The family structure is extremely important to the Gould family and they have embraced that culture and implemented this into their business. “Our philosophy is very much about listening to the land and realising our connection that we have with it” Brian Gould.

THE VINEYARD

With Michael Gould at the helm of the vineyard operations, Knotting Hill Estate is fast becoming a first class property producing some of the best quality fruit in the Wilyabrup region. Careful attention is paid to monitoring systems and low irrigation principles are used in the vineyard.

The first vines where planted in 1998 which included varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc. Verdelho, Viognier and Chardonnay were planted in the following years.

The Vision for our family is to create a sustainable family business that our children and grandchildren can be proud of, whilst producing only the highest of quality wines for our customers to enjoy. In our minds we let the vines tell us what to do, not the other way around and this has proven to be a successful philosophy and shines through in our Wine Awards, Accolades and Industry recognition.

THE REGION

With the first commercial vines planted in Margaret River in 1967, this region is often considered to be a young wine region in comparison to others around Australia. This has however had a very positive outcome for the Margaret River Wine Region as we're now a wine region that produces approximately 3% of Australia’s wine production, with more than 20% of that being produced for the premium wine market. We believe that this is a direct result of the superb growing conditions and the ideal Mediterranean style climate.

This vibrant industry, coupled with a thriving Tourism Industry makes the Margaret River Region the perfect choice for your next holiday or break away. Surrounded by pristine beaches, world class surf breaks and family friendly attractions such as the Margaret River Chocolate Company, NGILGI Cave, Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse and Yahava Koffee, makes this wondrous region something that should be enjoyed by all.

Our region also plays host to a range of annual local events such as Ironman WA, Anaconda Adventure Race, Busselton Jetty Swim and Geographe Bay Race Week to name a few. For further tourist information on Geographe Bay and the Margaret River Wine Regions, click on the links below.
